Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
–Simon & Garfunkel
REFLECTION:
Darkness frequently gets a bad rap. Often it is used as a metaphor for evil and wrongdoing, much steeped in fear. That said, I believe it can be a close friend, a confidant, if its seeds are planted in love. Such love remains intact as fear dissolves into the nothingness from whence it came. How can love split the night? A love so powerful to split the night is connected to the Universe’s outpouring of love from its innermost depths and heart. It is at this heart that a vision of love is conveyed, softly creeping into a soul that is prepared to listen. Listening in silence, in prayer, hearing the words that the spirit expresses to you, in love. There are signs that precede such an occurrence, and when we are vigilant, present, and open to the language of the spirit, even the darkest of hours is consumed in its glorious brightness.
Silence is as noble an action as ever created. In today’s active, hustling, and bustling life it has become a commodity. It must be intentionally sought out. During some of our most challenging times in life, silence can be hard to find. Silence, synonymous with peace, is the letting go of the need to hear. We trust it will be there guide us in our listening, without trying. Silence can also be a barrier between us, and if the wells of silence have been poisoned by the foolishness of ignorance and fear, these waters can carry disparaging dis-ease. When we release the unhealthy visions planted in our brains relating to struggle, pain, and hopelessness, we can begin to question what is the truth. It is the softly creeping holy silence that gives way to hope. Immersion beneath the cleansing echoing raindrops of truth can wash away the darkness, as we remain in the still whispering sound of silence.
