EJA

EJA

Sonnet XXIV

Why didst thou leave me in the light of morn

And censure mine being without just cause

So that fear o’ertake that were love once born

Making brave note, fair one, of all mine flaws?

As the star-filled sky through cloud thou shine,

To open thy firmament’s gold array,

Sent from the heavens thine image refine

That souls storming within ne’r cures the day

Can ev’ry soul from soul distinction make;

Though thou depart, hence I remain thy Muse;

I, the offender, in blue sorrow’s wake

Bid thee adieu, thy bearer’s cross abuse

Ah! that thine wounds do heal for thy heart’s sake,

And bear thee up and all my love do take.
