Glory

Glory

By John Legend & Common

(Written for the motion picture Selma)

CHORUS:  One day when the glory comes
It will be ours, it will be ours
Oh one day when the war is won
We will be sure, we will be sure
Oh glory (Glory, glory)
Oh (Glory, glory)

REFLECTION:

In the current climate of fear due to police brutality and disparities in social justice. Americans of every walk of life are hurting. The hurt is deep and tensions run high. African American’s and other people of color have suffered ongoing abuse at the hands of police officers that practice a disregard for equality. Many believe that there is a systemic racism practiced across the country and they demand change. Change is not easy and will not happen overnight, yet there are protests across the country that support exploring avenues to overhaul police forces throughout the land. The fear is great at this point in history as the country looks to the leadership to guide the country. That is not happening. So, when you have this disparity, there is friction. This fiction is not new, and it brings up historical racism and civil rights demonstrations.

The film “Selma” is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s odyssey to change racial disparities in this country. The bombings of black churches, lynchings in the South, and so many other frames of reference remind us that we were able to make some headway in the sixties, and we can do it again. So much of the crime in the US is often connected to this racial divide. Education, poverty, social justice disparities, lack of prison reform, along with police abuse has made for a destructive cocktail of inequality. It is thought that once we begin to bring the disparity in all of the above to an end, we will begin to see an empowered people sharing in the democratic processes and the building of our democracy. So our goal is to visualize the United States ensuring a quality education for all, social justice for all people of color, and equality for all. The song “Glory” is a song about hope and the ability for people to release fear and stand up for what is right, so that in the end we can sing “Glory” for the betterment of all Americans.
