EJA

Sonnet LVI

Ah! wherefore such ignorance ought ye show,

And undesired indignance hope neglect,

That crime, by sham cause, disadvantage grow,
And base its verdict on all that did project?

How could wronged puppet mimic like goodness

And plunder all that love doth represent?

When should poor soul bow to such callousness

As a star at dawn, that the sun augment?

Why such dissent, now anger unspoken

Broker of faith and saintliness sustain?

For there is no savior, just soul broken,

And, grace abounding, sings healing refrain.

O, that all may hear this song, hope attain,

That time over time, let love raise the strain!
